That is a very difficult to answer. Just in the city were I am there are at least 15 or 20, and probably a lot more. There are 4 or 5 major gun stores and most pawn shops sell guns, and most gun ranges sell guns. Now that I've said that, there are probably a lot more than 20. Within a couple of miles of my house, there are 10 or 12 pawn shops, and most of them sell guns. That's just in one city, and just inside the city limits, not including the metro area, and we are a relatively small city compared to most other major cities.

In order to be in the business of selling guns, the shop must hold a Federal Firearms License, issued by the BATFE. There are approximately 109,000 FFLs in the US.

That is correct, but that doesn't mean there are 109,000 gun shops in the U.S. Many of the FFL holders only do transfers for other people, but don't actually have a shop or sell guns. Anyone that applies for a new FFL must have a shop, but people that were processing transfers before the new law a few years ago were grandfathered in and can still process transfers from their home.
