From the factory, it will hold a total of 5: 4 in the magazine, plus 1 in the chamber. Remington includes an optional magazine plug that can be user-installed to limit the magazine capacity to 2 shells, in compliance with the Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act (but I seriously doubt anyone actually installs this unless hunting on Federal land). Third-party magazine extensions are readily available that will increase the capacity of the magazine by at least 3 more shells. (Seriously, if you have to ask this question you probably shouldn't be allowed to own a gun.)

The n = 2 level of hydrogen can hold eight total electrons--6 in the p shells and 2 in the s shells.
Per federal regulations, it can only hold a maximum of three shells (2 in the magazine tube + 1 in the chamber).
