fermented drinks rely on yeast to metabolize sugars producing alcohol as a waste product whereas distillation only increases the alcohol content by concentration
The body can metabolize the alcohol contained in one standard drink in about one hour.
Most people metabolize the alcohol found in one drink consumed per hour.
The average male can metabolize one serving of alcohol (one 12oz beer, one 3.5oz glass of wine, one shot of hard liquor) per hour. If you drink for a long time or many drinks at once, your body begins to lag a bit and it takes a bit longer to metabolize. If you are a girl it takes longer as well.
Different people process alcohol differently. I know that women's bodies metabolize alcohol differently and slower than men do.
The liver can metabolize one ounce of alcohol in one hour. Assuming each shot is one ounce, it would take three hours.

Everyone's bodies metabolize alcohol at a different rate. It is not accurate enough to determine how long ago you had a drink, or how many drinks you had. It can only tell how much alcohol you currently have in your system.
In order to stay healthy, your body does not need any alcohol. However, if you choose to drink alcohol, doctors suggest one or fewer drinks a day.
A healthy liver will metabolize about 0.6 ounces of pure alcohol per hour, the amount in one standard drink (one 12-oz. American beer, 5 ounces of wine, or one shot of 80 proof). It depends on how much alcohol was in the drinks that you drank, how many of them, and over what period of time. Figure an hour per drink and a couple of hours more to be safe, and you'll be in the neighborhood -- unless you were knocking back doubles or mixed drinks with more than one shot.
The average rule of thumb is at least an hour after the last drink. That is the approxamate time it takes your body to metabolize the alcohol. To be on the safe side, you can pump and dump. That's pumping what would be the first feeding upon your return and then dump it out to be sure there is no exposure to alcohol.
"Hard" drinks contain alcohol. Anything without alcohol is a soft drink.
