Cut out all sugar, hydrogenated or transfats, high fructose corn syrup, white flour and replace with vegetables, 3 oz of meat/protein per meal and unprocessed carbohydrates (baked potato with light topping, sweet potato, jasmine rice, etc.). You should have no fewer than 1400 calories, but with eating as above, you won't exceed the calories you need.

Be sure to exercise at least 30 minutes (walking?) a day. Snacks could be an apple, a small handful of nuts (ie almonds, walnuts), peanuts. If you like yogurt, watch the sugar content--there are some that have no added sugars that taste great.

The information on diabetic diets or weight watchers will serve you well.
