If you're sedentary (i.e. you don't exercise--like most Americans) and you're a man, probably no more than 3000 calories a day. 2000 for a woman. Caloric intake goes up if you are active. A 37-year-old owman who runs 50 miles a week can eat about 3700 calories a day and not gain weight.
