The Browning M2 was first fielded in 1921 - some 12 years before the British fielded their Vickers .50 machine gun, and some 17 years before the Soviets fielded the DsHK machine gun.
The M-2 carbine was designed to be fully automatic and as such is considered a "Machine Gun" even if the selector and automatic type sear are replaced with the M1 style ( semi-automatic )parts The Reciever must be marked M2 for it to be considered a machine gun. Chuck Linderman Dothan, Alabama
Amoskeag Auction Company lists a recent sale of a transferrable Browning M2 .50 machine gun for $16, 100. Although it is listed under their Class III auctions, it is most likely a full auto gun which was converted to semi auto (once a firearm is NFA licensed as a Class III weapon, it remains classified as such, even though it is no longer capable of firing full auto). There is one for sale currently on Guns America, which is full auto capable, for $25,995. Bear in mind, this is for a pre-86, NFA licensed transfer to a civilian buyer, and not what military purchasers pay for them.

A Browning M2 Heavy Machine gun with a 66418 serial would have been manufactured around 1958. Over 3 million M2 .50 cal machine guns have been manufactured.
A good case could be made for the M2
The M2, by far. The M2 uses the much more powerful 12.7x99mm (.50 BMG) cartridge, whereas the M1917 uses the much smaller and less powerful 7.62x63mm (.30-06) cartridge.
The 12.7x99mm/Caliber .50 cartridge used in rifles such as the Barret M82, MacMillan Tac-50, and others, as well as in the M2 machine gun is known as the .50 BMG - not the weapons themselves. BMG stands for "Browning Machine Gun", as the cartridge was developed for the Browning M2 machine gun.
The Maxim Gun, FN MAG 58, and Browning M2 HBAR are probably the most successful out of all of them.
See link below to the US Army Field Manual on the Caliber .50 M2 Machine Gun.
Depends on the machine gun. The US M60 has an effective range of 1,100 meters. The Browning M2 .50 cal has an effective range of 2,000 yards.
