Slavery has been around from very early ancient times, probably beginning during mankind's start of social stratification. Slavery operated in the first civilizations such as Sumer in Mesopotamia, which dates back as far as 3500 BC. As civilization spread, so did slavery, becoming accepted world-wide. Slaves consisted of all nationalities, ethnicities and religions including Christians, Jews, and Muslims. Legal Slavery continued for a span of about 5,000 years. Some areas started to outlaw the practice as early as 300 BC but larger scale end of this practice did not begin until 1220 AD. The earliest places to outlaw slavery were in Northern Europe and the Netherlands, from the period of 1220 AD to 1588 AD. Later followed China, England, Scotland and North and South America outlawing slavery from about 1723 to 1888. Not until 1900 did a great deal of the rest of the world including Africa, Asia, and the Middle East begin to outlaw slavery throughout the next 70 years completing the process in 1970. Although slavery is no longer legal, modern-day slavery still exists illegally today. Despite the horrible truths and reality of modern day slavery, many will be shocked to find that little to no action is taken by governments, as many turn a blind eye and pretend that it doesn’t exist, or simply draw up plans to combat the issue but never get around to properly implementing their ideas.

Today, 167 countries still have illegal slavery, affecting about 46 million people; children, women and men, that are trapped in different forms of slavery all over the world. The United Nations reports that in addition to that “more than 150 million children are subject to child labor, accounting for almost one in ten children around the world. The following six countries have the highest number of slaves:

India (18.4 million)

China (3.4 million)

Pakistan (2.1 million)

Bangladesh (1.5 million)

Uzbekistan (1.2 million)

North Korea (1.1 million)

Other countries with significantly high slave populations are Russia, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Indonesia, Egypt, Myanmar, Iran, Turkey, and Sudan.
