It truly depends on the quality and how often you take "one hit". Just like narcotics or any other drug, pot has what is called a "half life". This can get a bit confusing especially with marijuana. "Half life" is measured in how long the drug is affective. For example, if a drug has a "half life" of 12 hours, it means that every 12 hours it's effectiveness is cut in half, SO, a drug that has a half life of 12 hours would decrease it's detection/effectiveness in 6 hours. then 1/2 again in 6 hours then 1/2 again in 6 hours, etc. until it is out of the system completely. It is rumored that people that are worried about random drug testing carry an antibiotic (any antibiotic) with them at all times. If that person gets called for a drug test, they immediately swallow the antibiotic and a lot (glass or two) of water. It is supposedly best to pee just before your arrival at the place you will be tested. Then drink more water so you can pee again. Gives a false negative, or so it is rumored. (I think this is a "pot" only thing.. not other drugs). Be good!
