A low calorie diet is just a diet that is low in calorie, where a fad diet uses eating patterns that create very short term, rapid weightloss. Low calorie diets can in fact help one lose and keep off the weight.

So called “fad” diets are any kind of proscribed dietary intervention that the mainstream medical establishment does not endorse. The label “fad” does not mean the dietary intervention is bad, unhealthy, or ineffective. It just means your doctor won’t like it. Medicos are very resistant to change. Research shows that it takes, on average, 17 years for new, cutting-edge research to become common mainstream medical practice. So today’s “fad” will be “best practice” 17 years from now. Unless it isn’t based on actual, reliable, and replicable science. And then it will still just be a fad.
