This is not true. 300 yards is the distance at which your average Joe with an average AK-47 and or AKM can effectively hit a target. Competent shooters with higher quality AK's are able to hit center mass at much further then that. However the 7.62x39 cartridge has the capability of travelling in excess of 1000 meters and retain full lethality. The issue is that Ak's are not designed to effectively engage targets at that range and so actually hitting your target at the maximum range of the cartridge is a matter of luck.
