The Ghost of Christmas Past makes Scrooge revisit memories of his own Christmases, which were often lonely. Being continually boarded out in school, even at Christmas, the loss of his beloved sister, and the failure of his engagement to Belle all took their toll on him.
The Ghost of Christmas Present brings Scrooges focus on to what really is happening around him. In the story, Scrooge asks if the prisons and workhouses were still functioning (Stave one), yet had no idea that people of the time would rather be dead than suffer the indignity and poor condition these places offered. It is not until he is confronted by the children Ignorance and Want that he starts to see how he too is ignorant of the real world, where poverty and suffering is widespread.
The Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come shows Scrooge that he is and will die a lonely man, unloved and uncared for by anyone. He finally knows that the foretelling of his death is a short time away, and the thought of Jacob Marley's eternal walking of the earth in torment terrifies him. He makes a vow to change and to keep Christmas (and its spirit) in his heart for evermore.
