A "sniper" rifle is any firearm capable of producing accurate fire at very long range. They work the same as any other rifle. The firing pin, when released by the firing mechanism, strikes the primer. The primer explodes, producing a flame that ignites the gunpowder in the cartridge. Expanding gasses from the gunpowder force the bullet through the barrel, where engraved spiral grooves known as rifling grip the bullet, spinning it so that it travels in an accurate manner. The things that may be different on a "sniper" rifle are an adjustable trigger, a barrel that is "free floated) and only contacts the stock at a few measured points, a high quality telescope that may aid in estimating range and bullet drop, and a barrel made to higher standards than ordinary rifles.
