Scrooge tries to put out the light by, putting an extinguisher cap on it and in the book and in the movies he does not succeed. The light symbolizes the truth which is why he can't get rid of the light because you can never extinguish the truth.

This refers to the Ghost of Christmas Past who has a flame emulating from its heal which is used to light teh way in Scrooges past life. Scrooge takes a Lamp extinguisher which is carried by the Ghost and forces it over the ghosts flame putting out the light and extinguishing the ghost as well
