In most cases the best place to start when trying to determine the history of your firearm via serial number is to contact the manufacturer. In most cases they will be happy to help you, or direct you to someone who can.
It may not have one. Serial numbers were not required by law on rifles and shotguns until 1968.
The first 2 numbers are the year of manufacture- 1971. Nice rifles.
the early 500 series Remington 22 cal rifles did not have a serial number. I believe serial numbers were required after 1968
really old!! or fake or homemade <><><> Serial numbers on rifles and shotguns were not required by law until the 1968 Gun Control Act. I have a few dozen in my collection that have never HAD a serial number- and yes, it is legal.
Your Winchester model 255 was made from 1963-1971.winchester did not keep records of the serial numbers by year of production for the 200 series of rifles, which yours is.
After 1932 Winchester decided to choose random serial numbers for the model 1890 pump action .22cal rifles. This process continued on until the last rifles were made in 1941.Total production reached 762,215 rifles, but the serial numbers ranged as high as 849,100.Your rifle falls into this group. So your rifle was produced sometime between 1932-1941.
The winchester model 64 was serially numbered in the model 94 series. These rifles were made from 1933-1957.Your rifles serial number falls into the time frame of 1943-1948 when Winchester did not record serial numbers by the year of production due to World War II.If I had to say which year yours was made,I would say 1944.
Depending on the year of manufacture, there will be no serial number. Serial numbers are a relatively new requirement.
Could your serial number read 8E instead of B?If so your rifle was made in the year 1968.Browning did not use the prefix of the letter B ahead of its serial numbers for any rifles in 22 caliber.
There may be some letters after the numbers. If so, they are the key to the year of manufacture. See the link below to the Browning website.
We do not have a lot of public data on Mossberg serial numbers. The company IS still in business (and doing well), so you might contact them through their website. That model was made from 1972-1985. Nice little rifles, aren't they?
Made by Mossberg, and labeled with the Western Auto Revelation brand, your rifle is a Model 640K. If it has no serial number, it was made between 1959 and 1967. Rifles made in 1968 and later were required to have serial numbers. The model went out of production in 1985.
