The safest shut down method for a Windows Operating System (OS) is to press down the ALT and CTRL keys at the same time and hold down and press DEL. This safely allows the computer's OS to determine how to close any open or frozen programs and how to free up resources to allow other programs to shut down safely.

HOWEVER, on really bad freezes you may need to resort to pressing in the power button and releasing it to shut down the computer. Always try ALT+CTRL plus DEL first and give the computer a couple minutes to try to fix itself.

After a major crash, you may get a warning from Windows. You may need to do some simple maintenance to clean up the computer, such as:

  • run Anti-virus program
  • run anti-malware program
  • run Scan Disk
  • run Defrag

If you have a virus, don't run the other fixes until you get rid of the virus.

Whenever a computer or a laptop frezzes, you usually have to shut them down and turn them back on.
