Cigarettes are simply ground tobacco rolled in rice paper with a filter. You could plant your own tobacco, cure and dry it, and roll your own. However, in commercial cigarettes, things are added to change the color and flavor of the tobacco or to make up for some of the harshness. Menthol is a common additive. Different tobacco blends have different purposes. Pipe tobacco is generally harsher than cigarette tobacco. When the right blends are not available, other things are added to change the flavor.

Some of the things found in commercial cigarettes include: tobacco , carbon monoxide, acetone, ammonia, acetic acid, arsenic, benzene, cadmium, carbon tetrachloride, hydrogen sulphide, methanol, tars etc.

Making your own cigarettes by hand is an art that takes trial and error. First you would pull off a piece of rolling paper. You would lay it with the gummed side up and make a crease near the end opposite the gummed adhesive. The you would lay the tobacco in the the crease. You would have to experiment with the amount and position. Then you would evenly roll as tightly as you can. Then you can lick the gummed surface and press that down.
