For whatever help this is on 20 Aug 05, I am holding an Ithaca M49 which shows that the serial number is 9 digits long and stamped into the left front side, parallel to the barrel, and forward of the trigger in the action case. The serial numbers were added to the lower left of the receiver in the later 1960s as required by the gun act of 1968. I don't recall the exact dates.
