Years ago I used my Grandfathers Mdl 74 22 long, to hunt small game with and to kill vermin and snakes on his land. The Winchester Model 74 was the econo line of 22s some years ago, they came in 22 short and 22 long (please do not try to fire the shorts in the long model and vice a versa, these are older weapons) The type of round to use (short or long) will be stamped on the left side of the barrel near the end of the forgrip. (the wood stock the barrel sits in), usually it is on the last line. These are great Rifles to teach young shooters on and they also make a great cheap ways to practice marksmanship due to the long sight line (distance length of sites on barrel) the front and rear sight are adjustable for windage (front) and elevation (rear)

TO LOAD. there are 2 ways to load the Model 74: first make sure the weapon is unloaded by checking the chamber (pulling the bolt back) once you are sure it is unloaded, point the rifle in a safe direction down range and downward (pointing down at between a 45 to 60 degeree angle, and look at the rear butt plate, (this is the part that fits on your shoulder) in the middle of the butt plate you will see a square knob that sits left to right, turn the knob gently counter clockwise, "unlocking" it and gently pull the tube out of the stock.

YOU can Load the rifle now, in one of 2 ways: you can pull the tube all the way out and drop the Cartridges (bullets) into the hole point end first, then close push the tube into the butt stock and reset it by "locking" it back in place or pull the tube about 3/4 of the way out, which open the loading gate (that is what the "hole" in the right side of the stock is) and then "feed" or put the cartridges in point first into the hole, the rifle will need to be pointed towards the ground as gravity is used to move the rounds (bullets) down into the loading gate, The tube has a spring in it, when you push it back into the rifle the spring compresses and the Rounds partly sit inside the tube. The rifle will hold 12 to 15 rounds depending on make and caliber.

PLEASE make sure the tube is "locked" before firing. The safety is the "bar" that sits on top of the barrel just above the trigger (pushed RIGHT is Safety OFF, pushed LEFT is Safety ON) Good shooting and enjoy a great little rifle
