You could always tell him you needed to do school work and then really do it. But why not play a game with him first and then go about what you want to do? Just say, I can play one game and then I have some things I must do. Enjoy his company, he will not always be there with you and you will miss the opportunity you had to spend with him.

Without cards in your deck, you lose on your next draw because you can no longer complete the start phase (draw a card) to move to the main phase one (first change to play magis/spell cards. You may want to get rid of all cards from your hand. There are some cards with effects that activate only if you do not have cards in your hand.
