First, you would grab the slide and push back. Pushing back on the slide effectively prevents it from being able to fire.
Next, you would have to take one finger to activate the slide release - in the Lethal Weapon movie where it happened to Mel Gibson's character (I think it was Jet Li who was the actor that performed that move), he did it with a Beretta 92.. however, pistols like the Glock, Springfield XD/HS2000, Smith & Wesson Sigma and M&P.. first require the slide to be pushed all the way back, then for the slide release to be activated, then for the trigger to be pulled to release the slide. So it won't work with every pistol, and you can pretty much forget about it with any striker fired pistol (Glock, XD, Sigma, M&P, Kahr, etc.).
