By measuring them- gunsmiths use a choke guage for a quick check-
And by shooting it- if a gun puts the correct percentage of pellets in a 30 inch circle at 40 yards, the choke measurements do not matter.
The percentages-
- Super Full: 80-85 percent
- Full Choke: 65-70 percent
- Improved Modified: 55-65 percent
- Modified: 45-55 percent
- Improved Cylinder: 35-45 percent
- Skeet: 30-35 percent
- True cylinder (no choke): 25-35 percent
