The easiest way to determine if it is a 38 special or 357 magnum is to see if it is marked as such on your revolver. If it is not, then take a 357 magnum cartridge and drop it into the cylinder of the revolver. If it protrudes out the end of the cylinder of the revolver it is chambered for the 38 special cartridge. The 357 magnum is a longer cartridge then the 38 special. If still in doubt take it to a gunsmith and he will be able to determine this for you.
