Hold your finger down on the app you want to delete for a couple seconds, until all the icons on the screen start jiggling. A black X will appear in the top left corner of the icon. Click that black X, and a message will pop up asking if you're sure you want to delete it. Click the Delete button on the pop-up and the app will be deleted.

Press and hold the app on the home screen and all apps will visually wobble (shake), a X will appear in the corner of all apps. Tap the X and you will be asked to confirm the deletion of the app you wish to delete together with the apps contents and its associated files, then when you are finished deleting your apps you no longer wish then press the home button which will then lock the apps from deletion and all icons for the apps will become static. Remember if you use the iCloud backup service to delete the apps from there via settings if you do not wish to use the apps at a later date. This will increase the backup space available for other things you backup.
