If you already have a cat or a dog (and if you're older than 9 years old) the whole "Mommy I'm responsible!" and puppy-dog face isn't going to work for you. I'm trying to get a kitten as well, and I wrote my parents essays. Ask them what problems they see in getting a kitten. Then, in your essay, include why you would be a responsible pet owner and then write down the problems your parents see in getting a kitten and how they can be easily solved. It impressed my parents and now my dad is almost a total YES and my mom's on the borderline of YES and NO. Remember to tell them you'll pay for the kitten (if it isn't free) and you'll pay for the spaying/neutering, shots and worming...etc. Also, go get them to see the kittens so your parents get sucked into the kitten's ring of cuteness! Hope this helps! It helped me!
Pets require a lot of care and maintenance, and parents may not want to have the extra work that a pet requires. you first need to show your parents that you are mature and responsible enough to take care of these things yourself. Cats need to be fed, groomed and played with regulary. (don't fall for the myth that cats are independent, they do demand a good deal of your attention) There will be vet bills, and other expensise as well. Not to mention the most unpleasant part; the litter box which needs to be cleaned every day....
