As a child Scrooge spent most of his life in boarding school even at holiday times and more so at Christmas. This impacted on his later life. His father it was assumed had a reasonable income (based on full time school boarder fees) so their home would have been quite comfortable. the home Scrooge lived in when we first meet him was in fact his business partners Jacob Marley. It was originally a town house in inner London so it would have been costly and well decorated. Marley was not miserly like Scrooge and did like to afford the better tings in life. Scrooge took ownership upon Marley's death as Marley had no family . Scrooge, true to form sold off many parts of it as apartments and the basement to a wine merchant who used it for storage. Scrooge kept 3 rooms in the first floor area. It was sparsely furnished and had little if any money spent on his rooms - They were quite dark as again Scrooge wouldn't buy expensive candles
