So many things require the Home button that your problem is more than just restarting the iPod. Get it fixed, or replace it.
Then it's time for a new iPod.
Hold the home button and power button and it should restart otself

Restart the ipod, by holding the centre and menu buttons OR the lock and home button (Ipod touch), then reconnect to the computer.
It depends on what is wrong with it. If you need to reset it, hold the home button with the power button wait until it switches off you will then see the apple symbol and your iPod should then restart, this if its an iPod Touch
Hold the Home button and Sleep button at once until the screen goes black (about 10 seconds). The iPod will then restart, which can take a few minutes.

If your ipod is broken you can try to click the home button and power button (at the same time) for about ten seconds or so. If then it still isn't turning on I would recommend bringing your ipod into an apple store where you can get professional help.
When it freezes hold down the power button (the one at the top) and the home button for about 10 seconds or until the apple symbol shows up on the screen. Your ipod will restart and it should be fine.
hold down the sleep button at the top until it asks to power down. do so and press the home button to restart.
