It's recommended by most tattoo or piercing parlors for you to wait at least 6 months to a year to change the bar to something else. This allowes your freshly pierced cartilage to heal. Also make sure you follow the instructions of the person who pierced it for cleaning and care to prevent infections or irritation. You paid all that money and went through the pain please take care of your industrial piecing.
Most are done at a 14g. If you're referring to the length of the bar, that varies person to person. If you have a bigger or wider ear, you'll obviously need a longer bar than someone with smaller ears.
