Normally the manufacturer sends their product to a national or worldwide distributor, who has access to many accounts and clients. The distributors make it possible for smaller companies to access a wider client base.

The distributor should have access to the manufacturer, who should have lot numbers, batch numbers, dates of manufacture, ect.. Knowing the parties involved will help in finding out who to contact.

Consider this..

The distributor will submit a purchase order (PO) to the manufacturer, whenever they need product, that is when the product is shipped, not made. In most cases the product will have already been manufactured, either in house or by another company that is capable of making the product and putting it in its container/packaging.

If this is the case, then the original Lot number will come from the source. It is possible for the Principal owner of the product to add their own lot numbers, bar codes ect, after they receive it from the source.

Many third party manufactures will provide everything, containers, product, labeling, bar codes, and lot numbers with expiration dates. For a premium obviously. Larger manufacturers are usually CGMP certified, meaning they maintain accurate records in accordance with the FDA and its inspections.

Hope this is informative :) Adam
