African slaves were the unpaid labor of America. Therefore, much of the construction in America, especially antebellum mansions were the work of slave laborers. In addition, there are priceless contributions to our musical heritage, beginning in meeting places like Congo Square in New Orleans, slaves contributed the rhythms and beats that would form much of our American popular music such as Jazz, Rock, Blues, Gospel, Rhythm and Blues as well as Rap and Hip Hop.
