No interviews were conducted with this question as content, however because he was deeply Christian, it would be likely to presume that he thought of homosexuality as a sin. That said, one of his main beliefs was in forgiveness of sins - one of the main reasons he played many concerts in prisons. Also, if one was to look at his political opinion - Native American rights, anti-war etc. one could presume that he had no prejudices against gays.

How do you defend gay rights?

You could defend gay rights by explaining that it is not a choice and that (if you're a Christian) God wanted you to be different from everyone else. You could say that you feel offended when you are called insulting names and that you don't appreciate it. Of course, it depends on what is meant by "gay rights." You can counter with the question of "What rights would you deny to gay people, and why?" In fact, LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) people aren't asking for any special rights -- just those we share with the rest of humanity, including "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."
