It is unnerving that you posted this is in the area of abuse. Public humiliation can be achieved the same way as any humiliation tactic - except it is done in front of others. Humiliation is often very degrading to individuals and should not be done intentionally in most circumstances.

To improve the above answer, it is not unnerving, unless it is done improperly. In come cases, public humiliation is the only way to get things done. I know from personal experience that, when used as a last resort, it is very effective. You just have to know how and when to use it. Only use information that is needed to humiliate that person. Don't waste all your cards at once. And don't make yourself look desperate.
