How can you find the value of a Winchester Model 94 from the serial number?

Valuing a Model 94 is similar to pricing used (or antique) cars. A five year old Chevy with only a few hundred miles on it will sell closer to the price of a new one than one with 100,000 miles even if both still look nearly new. And chosing between two 100K cars, the one that was garaged and had regular maintenance will bring much more than one with fading paint, torn seat covers, oil leaks, and crumpled fenders. With the serial number there are several sources to find out what year a Winchester was manufactured, but that is only the beginning of determining its value. Any firearm made before Midnight, 31 December 1898, is legally an antique in the US and that usually increases the value significantly. Winchesters made before 1964 are valued by collectors if they have a high percentage of original finish while newer ones and those with significant wear are valued for their usefulness. There are several general configurations of the 94: standard rifle, carbine, saddle-ring carbine, trapper carbine, etc., with round or octagonal barrels. Then there are special order features like non-standard barrel lengths or special sights. The 94 was chambered for a variety of cartridges and collectors will pay more for unusual ones but often less for obsolete chamberings for which ammunition is no longer available. Of course a shooter will have absolutely NO interest in a gun chambered for something like .44 rimfire as it would essentially be unusable. A collector will want a gun that has not been modified since it left the factory, and for a fee the Cody Museum will research the old records and give a letter stating the exact original configuration, when it was manufactured, and sometimes when and where it was shipped from the factory. Someone who wants to use the gun will be less concerned about its originality and any difference may be a plus for one and a minus to another. The primary concern to either a collector or a shooter will be the CONDITION. Any buyer will want the gun to be as close to new condition as possible.
