Capacity, in this case, is the same as volume. Which formula you use to get the answer is dependent on the shape. Here are some general formulas:

For rectangular prisms (box-like) - length x width x height.

Ex: A perfect cube whose sides are each 2 meters has a volume of 2x2x2, or 8, m^3.

For cylinders (can-like) - п x r^2 x height, where п (pi) is a value of 3.14159, and r is the distance from the center of the circle to the edge.

Ex: A cylindrical can of Folger's Coffee has a volume of п(3)^2 x 7, or 63п, in^3.
