Go to Armscollectors dot com, you can get a date of manufacture by running the serial number thru their database. Then go to the various gun auctions (Gunbroker, Auctionarms) and compare other '73's of the same caliber that are of a similar age and in a condition. Keep in mind that people have put these items for sale on line because they couldn't get what they felt it was worth locally, and they're looking for a sucker on line. The gun is probably only worth 80% of what they're asking. If you Google "Winchester 73" You'll find some in regular auctions, bookmark them and come back after the auction closes to see what they actually sold for. Most folks buying guns like yours are collectors, so if the gun's be modified, like a with modern sites or a 'scope, or if it's been refinished or repaired, in spite of the fact it may look nice, it's not worth as much as one in original condition.
