There are a number of ways to get rid of credit card debt, though some are more effective than others. It is quite common for people to transfer the debt from one credit card to another credit card that has no or low interest on balance transfers. It is also quite common for credit card debt to be included in a personal loan or car loan, or for it to be absorbed into the mortgage.

Credit card debt has been around since the credit card was invented, a no-risk way to buy now and spend later, and people flocked to it. Only to later discover that they were kept in a debt trap and now they’ve got stacks of bills to pay back with money they don’t have. Getting rid of credit card debt entails two things: making a plan, and paying things back.

Making a Plan - Chances are, you are feeling overwhelmed by your credit card debt. It’s a common reaction to want to hide and ignore it rather than deal with it, but you need to get started by getting out in front of it. Write down all of the debt that you owe, and don’t spare any details. Know the facts first, and then make a list.

After the amount of debt and the monthly payments required have been written down, then you need to make a budget. Cut out all unnecessary spending and write down payments for things you absolutely need. After you subtract your income from the monthly payment, whatever is left will be the income you can use to handle your debt. Go down the list and start using the income to pay off your debts, and keep this going month after month until the debt is gone.

Taking Action - It can be overwhelming to look at your debt, even if you have it all listed, and compare it to your relatively small monthly income. Instead, don’t think and just allocate the money. You can take care of the smaller debts first, or just focus on the much larger debts that are crippling your interest rates.

If you handle the largest debt first, the interest rates on the rest of your debt will go down and you will be charged less. Whichever end you attack your debt from, you just need to attack it and get going.

Be proactive and disciplined with your budget. It can be hard to stick to your budget if you owe months worth of debt and you might even wonder when you can start living your old free-spending life again. Keep things in perspective, and say that every month you spend in sacrifice is a month towards financial freedom. Plus, imagine what your life would be like if you started taking action to overcome your debt and live a nice life free from the fear of opening the mail. Your money can, and should be working for you.

Get Help - Sometimes you just need to ask the experts and seek professional help when you are unable to get out from the mountain of crushing debt, and we can help you develop, plan, and stick to a budget that helps provide some serious debt relief for you. We offer a free consultation to help you assess your current financial situation and guide you towards the first step to getting out of debt! Learn more by going to

In BC if you are on Disability assistance and cannot make payments on a 4800 credit card debt using it for groceries and bills and are mentally ill what are your best options?

Its totally up to you if you want to use your credit cards. I am on disability and you will not get anything from the gov't for credit card debt no matter what you use them on. They supposedly give you enough money for groceries so you cannot say that you caused the debt buying groceries or anything else for that matter. You are on your own. good luck, i know how hard it is to get rid of credit card debt.
