All the spirits teach scrooge a lesson
The first it is foretold will visit on Chritmas Day at one am, the second the next night at the same time and the thrid the next at the last stroke of 12 mid night. This proves to be wrong as all three visit scrooge on the same night
MArley was allowed to return to do a good deed and warn Scrooge that he(scrooge) was making teh same mistakes as Marley and the out come would be worse as Marley points out he (Marley) will walk the earth for all eternity in torment for not making mankind his business

Marley was very much like Scrooge in life. However, Marley having suffered seven years of torment in the after life sees that that Scrooge is also destined for everlasting torment after his death and he seeks to redeem himself if only slightly by warning his friend Ebenezer
Jacob has been allow back in to the living realm to warn Scrooge about his nasty miserly ways. Marley warns Scrooge that he has created a heavy burden of chain link by link . Marley lifts his chains and shows Scrooge the length saying "this was the same length as yours 7 Christmases again and you have worked on it ever since. In returning Marley has procured the help of three spirits to help Scrooge

In Charles Dickens' classic tale "A Christmas Carol," the ghost of Jacob Marley visits his former friend and partner Ebeneezer Scrooge late on Christmas Eve. No year is given, but the novella was published in 1843 and appears to be a more or less contemporary story. The other three spirits were, according to Marley, to have visited Scrooge every night for three successive nights beginning that very evening at midnight. However, after the manifestations have passed, Scrooge discovers to his delight that they concluded their business all on the same evening, so that it is only Christmas morning when the last vision ends.
They are all based on the story be Charles Dickens. Different versions have tried such things as modernizing the story, changing the location to other cities and even changing the gender of Scrooge. But the basic story line remains the same, redemption through the experiences with the spirits.
