They are not! The only way they could be is if the tattoo artist is not using clean equipment (needles etc) otherwise tattoo's are perferctley safe providing you give them the proper after care.
They could, however, be harmful to your career, if a prospective employer does not like tatoos.

- Cross contamination can cause a nasty infection. Don't let anybody touch your fresh tattoo, and be sure to keep the area clean.
- If a tattoo is too deep it can cause scarring or blood poisoning.
- Too shallow, the ink will fade quickly.
