(From about 60+ years ago): the iron tyre (as they are called) about 5 ft across, was wrapped in light cloth all the way round, and some kero was sprinkled on the cloth and set fire. The tyre was sitting on some bricks to keep it off the floor.

When the blacksmith judged the tyre to be hot enough he went round and tapped and swept all the cloth off the tyre.

The tyre was then presented to the wooden wheel and billows of smoke arose, which the blacksmith quickly quenched with water sprinkled on. At this stage he carefully checked that the tyre matched the wheel width, and continued to cool it.

Why are tools often heated before fixing wooden handles?

Heating the metal tool expands them. After fitting the wooden handles the tools are allowed to cool and, as they do so, they contract so that they grip the handles tightly.

Why are tools heated before fixing wooden handles?

Fair Question !! I can only assume that as metal shrinks when cooling, this would grip the wooden handle firmly, and reduce the risk of the handle coming loose when the tool is in use.

Why a metal rim that has to be fitted on a wooden wheel is heated before being fixed?

The metal rim will expand when heated. It will then contract once placed round the wooden wheel's rim. This contraction will tighten and hold the wooden rim in a vice-like grip. The spokes and the wooden rim is made in separate parts and need the metal rim to hold it all together.

Why does iron rims are heated red hot before 'fixing' them on cart wheels?

The rims expand slightly when heated. Once they're in place on the wooden wheel frame, they're cooled with water - making them shrink tightly to the circumference.

Reaction for heated CuCO3 and a wooden splint?

The CuCO3 produces CO2 when it is heated, so the wooden splint will go out since the carbon dioxide would inhibit the oxygen from allowing the splint to stay lit.

How the metal tire is fitted on the wheel of bullock cart?

The wooden wheel is soaked or kept wet for an hour or so, not too long or it will swell and the joints come apart. The metal tyre is heated by turning it in a fire using tongs until it has expanded enough to fit over the wooden wheel. It is knocked down around the wooden wheel on the ground using a hardwood block and a four pound hammer. It is then cooled in oil.

Why does a metal rim have to be fitted on a wooden wheel?

The metal rim, which is fitted when it is red hot, shrinks when cool to bind the sections of the wheel together. It also acts as the tread of the wheel so that the wood does not become abraded by the rocks over which the wheel passes.
