The saying "tell me who your friends are and I will tell you who you are" refers to "you are who you hang out with." Humans are pretty adaptable creatures and can blend in with our surroundings. Depending on who one is spending time around, one would sooner or later begin acting, even if subtly, as those that occupy ones time. For example, if one doesn't smoke and hang out with a bunch of smokers, one will end up giving in to peer pressure and pick up the habit. If one were not the academic kind of person, hanging around academically gifted people would give one the incentive to be the same, therefore; "you are who your friends are."
