I can only answer for myself here. I have been doing just the DVD, not the corresponding diet which you can access online. In one month of doing the DVD almost daily (I think I actually did 26 days, not 30) and with more sensible eating, I lost about 4 pounds and look firmer all over. My clothes fit a lot better now and I do have increased energy. The workouts take about 25 minutes total and I have found them to be much more effective than a lot of longer DVDs out there. You would probably have even more dramatic results with Jillian's diet too, but I just never got around to signing up online.

In regards to gyms, there is a gym called Curves that is specically geared toward women. In fact, only women can enter the facility. If your wife is looking for a DVD workout, Jillian Michaels makes numerous DVDs including the "30 day shred" which seems to be popular among women.
If you are overweight, you have lots of options. I highly recommend Gillian Michaels' 30-Day shred. All you need are two 5lb hand weights and 20-minutes a day.
