Liquors that are high in alcohol and low in sugar are considered spirits. Think vodka, whiskey, gin, tequila, and rum. If the beverage is some sort of sweet, spicy concoction, it's a liqueur. Think Drambuie, Benedictine, Galliano, Amaretto, Jägermeister, and Cointreau.

Yes, much more, spirits are taken in lower volumes due to their percentage of alcohol. e.g. a shot has about the same alcohol content as a mug of beer.
