Nervousness is a natural reaction to something that is both new and uncertain.
If you are more comfortable bringing a friend along, then feel free to do so, but understand the other issues at play. 1st, will the boyfriend tolerate another person? 2nd, will your friend be able to give you enough room...and this is important! No one wants to bring a friend along just to have them do ALL the talking, or crowd you so much that you and your boyfriend can spend no time together getting to know each other. Finally, make sure your friend is someone you trust and know. It is much nicer NOT to be surprised by the friend you brought along and thought you could rely on :)
