Tattoos themselves do not cause inflammation. However, redness, welling and sensitivity are apparently very common within in the first 48 hours of getting a tattoo.

The needles used to create tattoos certainly can cause inflammation, particularly if they have not been properly sterilised. Tattoo "artists" need to implement stringent health practices such as fully sterilising their tools, thoroughly washing their hands, and even using sterilised water to dilute the tattoo ink. The tattoo ink itself may be an inferior product.

Infections as a result of tattooing are an increasing problem. The Mycobacterium bacteria, which can be introduced through the tattoo process, can cause anything from rashes to painful and severe abscesses. Even the Staphylococcus aureus bacteria can be introduced through tattoos. So, yes, the result of having a tattoo can certainly be inflammation.

Tattoos can have adverse effects on the body, unfortunately. Tattoo ink uses colored pigments that bleed to your lowest skin layer (which makes them permanent). Tattoos can cause lymph nodes to become inflamed. If tattoo pigments migrate from a tattoo site to a lymph node site, then it can cause the lymph node to become inflamed (this requires a large amount of particles to accumulate in the lymph node site).
