Santa is called "Kerstman" in Dutch. There's also the Dutch equivalent of Santa, which is "Sinterklaas".

Also, "Sinterklaas" is technically not the actual santa, Google does translate it like that, but meh.

"Kerstman" is for Christmas and "Sinterklaas" is another holiday (on which we get presents from our family members). The idea is the same though, kids are supposed to think that Sinterklaas enters the house through the chimney, and put presents in the kids' shoes (which they placed there on the evening of December 4, the day before the holiday.)

No, Dutch children believe that St. Nicholas lives in Spain, not the North Pole. In the Netherlands, St. Nicholas is known as Sinterklaas and the story is that he arrives from Spain by steamboat to deliver gifts on his feast day, December 5th.

Is or was there really a Santa Claus?

Saint Nicholas, better known as Santa Claus, was a man back in the old days who,on December 25th of each year, brought presents to good children around the world with the help of his wife and children. Some believe they traveled by sleigh pulled by flying reindeer. This is false;the reindeer did not, cannot, and will not fly. However, the reindeer were very fast, and due to time zones,Nicholas and his family could succeed in giving presents to the world in 1 day. Saint Nicholas and his wife have passed away,so the job is passed down to their descendants. And no,there were no "elves" as they don't exsist, but Nicholas' children did make toys And "Santa Claus" didn't live in the North Pole, but he was close. That's what I believe anyway.

How old is the story of Santa Claus?

The first Santa Claus was from Turkey. His name was St. Nicholas and he lived and performed miracles in the town of Demre in southwestern Turkey.Santa turned 273 on his last birthday, of course that is not very old when you live at the North Pole. He can live for many more hundreds of years. However the Dutch version of his life got slightly corrupted, and became the modern Santa Claus.
