Henk, who's going to the Indies, suggested that hey should just give the old man a photograph of the whole family. this was agreed upon by the family so they went to a photographer one Sunday and had their picture taken. on the day of Grandfather's birthday, the family decorated the room and prepared the things needed for the party. Dirk, the one assigned to get the photo, went home with nothing. they can't get the photo, their gift, because they couldn't pay the balance. at the end of the story, Grandfather just paid the balance because he didn't want his family to be disappointed.
