In Ectomycorrhizae the mycelium forms a dense sheath aka mantle over the surface of the root. From this fungal hyphae extend from the mantle into the soil which increases surface area greatly. On the other hand arbuscular mycorrhizae do not have a dense mantle around the root, but they still have microscopic hyphae that extend into the root.
