The Attorney General is the chief legal advisor to the government, and is responsible for the representation of the government in court (although rarely appears in person). In some countries, the Attorney General may have responsibility over law enforcement and/or public prosecutions.

The Solicitor General is a similar office, but is either the Attorney General's deputy (as in the UK), or a person who represents the government in court (as in the US).
