Single ascending dose study: a small group of subjects receive single dose of the investigated drug; the dosage is escalated for a new group of subjects only when certain safety criteria are met after a period of observation time

Multiple asceding dose study: a group of subject receive multiple dosing of the investigated drug and a number of PK/PD parameters are observed. Later the dosage is escalated for another new group of subjects for multiple dosing, until a predefined dose level.
