Arguably, based on the definition of "shotgun" being: "A smoothbore gun that fires shot over short ranges" the first muskets and handcannons were shotguns. The first historical accounts of a firearms and cannons and the like was in China around 700 AD (CE)
It's basically a 870 which is unquestionably the best pump shotgun ever made.
"Best" is a subjective term. Applications which one firearm may be ideal for won't be for other firearms, and vice versa.

I would like to start out with I have never seen a Browning serial number as described by you.Are we sure that you have a Browning 16ga shotgun,or another made shotgun that may have used Browning,s patent?I must admit that I have never seen a straight stocked Browning shotgun or heard of one in my many years of collecting firearms.
