Colt made a small number of Colt Detective Specials with the 3 inch barrel. I had one and stupidly let it get away in a trade. My next door neighbor's wife has one her father gave her but sentimental value won't let me swap something for it. I have seen a late issue (3rd or 4th issue) in stainless steel with a shrouded 3 inch barrel on GunBroker.

If you have one, I'd be willing to talk about taking it off your hands.

What is the history and value of a Colt Army Special 38 revolver with a 3 inch barrel serial number 425721 on the frame in Excellent condition little bluing is worn away and a few minor dents?

You will need to pay Colt for a historical letter. Value will depend on what the letter says and if it verifys that the pistol is in the same configuration as when it left the factory. 3" bbls were not that common. If the dents are in the metal, expect significant value reduction. If in the grips less, but, still some.
